One of our Certified Mobility Agents recently switched his device and service from the AT&T Apple iPhone to the Sprint EVO 4G and completely sold several employees on the device and its capabilities.  The EVO 4G is definitely news worthy but there are a few things IT managers should consider before deploying the device in their organization.

•    Determine if 4G services are available in the cities and states you are managing mobility.  (See 4G city chart below)
•    What are the needs of the organization?  Think strategically -today and longer term.
•    What security factors do you need to consider?

On Monday, Apple CEO Steve Jobs astounded mobile techies with the cool new features of the iconic iPhone. With new features like improved battery life, multi-tasking, a faster processor, a better screen and pixel resolution, iBookstore, app storage, and a new Micro SIM - Apple continues to maintain a competitive advantage while attracting a variety of people in various demographics to the technology. General availability is June 24, 2010 on AT&T but people can pre-order as early as June 15 through a variety of channels.

Thu, 27 May 2010 11:30:00 -0700 The device you carry equals the price you pay to get out of your wireless service contract http://blog.moverotech.com/the-device-you-carry-equals-the-price-you-pay http://blog.moverotech.com/the-device-you-carry-equals-the-price-you-pay

Beginning June 1, 2010, AT&T is changing the terms for early termination fees. What does this mean for companies who have existing contracts with AT&T?

Existing AT&T customers currently in a two-year contract and those companies who have an existing enterprise services agreement will not be affected.  That means new customers and new enterprise services agreements including contract renewals will all be subject to the new terms. Verizon started this trend back in November 2009. AT&T is the second carrier to adopt this ETF model.

Contracts

The new early termination fees are based on the type of device you carry.

Here is the break down:

Quick messaging or basic phones

The ETF has been lowered from $175 to $150 with $4 deducted every month that you remain with AT&T through the duration of the contract. The ETF will be prorated based on the amount of time you have remaining in the contract.

Phone examples: Sony Ericsson W518A, Samsung a777, Nokia 6350

Smartphones and Netbooks

The ETF has increased from $175 to $375 with $10 deducted every month you remain with AT&T through the duration of the contract. The ETF will be prorated based on the amount of time you have remaining in the contract.

Phone examples: Apple iPhone 3G, BlackBerry Curve 8520, HTC Pure, LG Expo

Why is AT&T making this change?

The reasoning behind this is that the subsidy on high-tech equipment is much higher than the current $175 ETF. For example, a new customer receives a subsidized discount on an iPhone 3GS 16GB and pays $199 and signs a two-year service contract with AT&T (The unsubsidized price for an iPhone 3GS is $399). If a customer decides to cancel the service early, AT&T say the current $175 ETF does not cover the difference in the subsidized cost.

Existing customers can maintain a zero contract and zero ETF (after the original contact terms are met) but spend more to upgrade the existing device.

United States Carrier Early Termination Fee Matrix

Tips for Managing Carrier Contracts

•    Know when your existing services agreements end for all carriers
•    Understand the discounts and contract terms for each carrier
•    Create calendar notifications to remind you when contracts end
•    Engage with your carrier representative a month or so early to begin the negoitating process

We want to hear from you. What do you think about the new carrier early termination fees?

Fri, 21 May 2010 07:37:00 -0700 iPad: To Be or Not to Be for Enterprise Mobility? http://blog.moverotech.com/ipad-to-be-or-not-to-be-for-enterprise-mobili http://blog.moverotech.com/ipad-to-be-or-not-to-be-for-enterprise-mobili

Apple has seen much success in the last few months with the release of the iPad, with more than one million sold in the United States. People are calling it an enormous iPod Touch and a media consumption device. Many organizations are looking at throwing out their field laptops and smartphones and replacing them with the iPad. Before the company spends thousands of dollars implementing the iPad, consider the pros and cons.

Ipad_accessories_6

The iPad is a handheld tablet used for surfing the Internet, playing games, reading e-books, watching movies, viewing photos, listening to music, reading e-mail, taking notes, and updating calendar tasks. The iPad supports the Safari browser and iWork.

Top reasons to pass go and adopt the iPad

•    Easy navigation – operating systems (OS) is extremely intuitive

•    Sleek look - latest technology equals competitive advantage

•    Smaller and thinner than a laptop – larger work area and fewer limitations of a smartphone

•    Easy to travel with and carry – light weight

•    Convenient docking station and attachable keyboard

•    A positive user experience

•    Compatible with thousands of mobile applications

•   Communicates directly with Microsoft Exchange Server via ActiveSync

•   Secure access to private corporate networks using established industry-standard VPN protocols - iPad supports Cisco IPSec, L2TP over IPSec, and PPTP.

Top reasons to stop and wait to adopt the iPad

•    No uniform way to deploy mobile applications

•    iWork only – Currently no option for Microsoft Office 2010

•    Apple App Store is a proprietary software distribution model and does not support volume purchases

Professionals currently using the iPad

•    Lawyers use it to stay up-to-date on their areas of practice by reading blogs and online articles or using it at trial or at a deposition to cross    a witness in lieu of flipping through deposition transcripts or stacks of papers

•    Health care providers use the iPad for medical education and patient-clinician communication (e-prescription software)

•    Field Sales use the iPad for on-the-road sales presentations and demos

•    Higher education institutions use the iPad for e-learning, teaching, reading e-books, and application development

The jury is still out on whether the enterprise will adopt this device and how.  But one thing’s for sure, Apple has the coolness factor and employees will push for a way to use it at work.

We’d love to hear from our readers!  Have you bought one?  Is your company currently looking at ways to leverage its usage?  Or is it still just too new to know?

Movero was one of the very first managed mobility companies to support the Apple iPhone back in 2007 and we now support the iPad for enterprise customers.

BES Express Basics

For many years, organizations have looked to Research in Motion as the preferred vendor to manage corporate e-mail. Today, the market is shifting and smaller companies everywhere need an e-mail solution for both individual and corporate users.

Major differences between BES and BES Express
BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express is a version of the enterprise BES 5.0 aimed at small to medium sized businesses. BES Express supports both corporate users traditionally on enterprise BES along with consumer BlackBerry devices without BES data plans - normally on BlackBerry Internet Services (BIS). BES Express supports both BlackBerry Exchange and Microsoft Small Business server. It’s a free download, but expect long download times.

Web-Based Interface
BES Express also uses a web-based self-service interface and Apache-based Java web app server to handle integration.

No Need to Purchase CALS
That’s right, the IT manager no longer has worry about how many CALs have been ordered.

Capacity Limits
Server capacity limits BES Express to 75 users; however, one can install additional servers to support as much as 2000 users.

Fri, 23 Apr 2010 14:09:00 -0700 Top 3 Reasons Corporate Wireless Employees Call into the Help Desk http://blog.moverotech.com/top-3-reasons-corporate-wireless-employees-ca http://blog.moverotech.com/top-3-reasons-corporate-wireless-employees-ca

Benchmark studies from Gartner show that the average corporate wireless user will call the help desk 3-4 times a year. What are they calling about? Movero Technology has been tracking incident trends and has identified the top 3 reasons for calls into a wireless help desk.

Istock_076

#1 Activation Assistance
The number one reason corporate wireless users call the help desk is for activation related issues. New activations, upgrade assistance, swapping from one device to another, etc.

 #2 How-to Assistance
End-user education accounts for a tremendous amount of help desk resource time. With a variety of operating systems (OS), original equipment manufacturers (OEM), a number of native and corporate sponsored applications and various e-mail platforms, it is no wonder how-to questions rank # 2.

Below are a few examples of How-to questions wireless support teams receive daily:

How do I…

•    Sync my calendar and contacts?
•    Set-up visual voice mail?
•    Set-up and access VPN?
•    Set-up WIFI?
•    Sync with my computer?
•    Transfer files?
•    Connect / access sites on the Internet?
•    Organize my folders?
•    Activate and use iTunes?

•    Download corporate applications? The list goes on....

Istock_078

#3 Service Changes
The third reason corporate wireless users are calling the help desk is to make changes to their wireless service. In the enterprise mobility world, we refer to this as Moves – Adds – Changes – Deletes (MACD).

Moves
Involve moving service from one carrier to another, IE., transferring service from Sprint to AT&T usually with the same number, also known as line number portability (LNP).

Transfer of liability (TOL) or changing the financial responsibility (COFR) of an account from one person or entity to another. For example, employee A is leaving the company and wants to transfer-out the wireless phone number and service, leaving the employee financially responsibility for the bill.

Adds
Adding features such as text/short message systems (SMS), international roaming and dialing, etc.

Changes
Changing minute plans, features, or suspending service

Deletes
Removing features or cancelling service

As companies continue to adopt mobility into their organizations, they should consider how to support their wireless population and these types of calls. Unfortunately, typical IT departments lack the time or experience to handle complicated wireless support issues, leaving employees to resolve issues on their own, taking time away from productive work.

Movero Technology has been supporting corporate wireless users for more than six years and offer solutions to offload support of any size organization. Learn more at Movero Wireless Help Desk.

Are you currently supporting corporate wireless users?  We want to hear from you. Share your feedback and experience with our readers.

We look forward to your feedback.

Mon, 19 Apr 2010 13:20:00 -0700 Enterprise Mobility and Open Standards http://blog.moverotech.com/enterprise-mobility-and-open-standards http://blog.moverotech.com/enterprise-mobility-and-open-standards
It's crazy out there! The speed at which new technologies are introduced into the mobility market is astounding and there's every reason to believe that the market will continue to accelerate for some time to come. As more and more devices hit the market, with such growing diversity in capabilities, we are seeing large numbers of companies providing ancillary products and services for both consumer and enterprise customers.

There is a very large amount work that's been done, and is being done, to help enterprises manage and service employee mobile devices. It feels like there is a new entrant into the Mobile Device Management (MDM) market every week. As things continue to diversify, there is a growing need for vendors and end users alike to start pushing for open standards on these devices for everything from device management to carrier interoperability. I believe it will be imperative that all parties involved begin to embrace and strive for standard ways to manage the ever growing number of devices and technologies.
Istock_072
A very likely starting point would be the Mobile Device Management standards being driven by the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA). The OMA mission statement sums their efforts up quite nicely:

"The mission of the Open Mobile Alliance is to facilitate global user adoption of mobile data services by specifying market driven mobile service enablers that ensure service interoperability across devices, geographies, service providers, operators, and networks while allowing businesses to compete through innovation and differentiation."

The OMA is made up of some of the largest "players" in almost every mobility market. Their member list includes some of the biggest organizations from carriers, device manufacturers, to OS and software development vendors. Many members are MDM vendors that have built products that support these standards. They are working to define standards for security, provisioning, configuration, software updates, fault management, and a score of other functions and features that will be necessary to define good standards for managing devices, not just for enterprises, but for the mobility ecosystem as a whole. Here is a great list of some of their current releases: http://www.openmobilealliance.org/Technical/current_releases.aspx

As newer devices have hit the market, such as the iPhone and the host of Android devices, it's somewhat disheartening that there still isn't broad support for these standards. As the proliferation of new devices in the enterprise continues to grow, the struggle to manage them will continue to get worse and the costs will continue to rise. MDM vendors will continue to be forced to play a constant game of "catch up" and it isn't a leap to think that the carriers will be hit hard by similar struggles as they work to support more and more diversity on their networks.

Without more support for such standards the struggle will continue and many enterprises will be forced to play a constant game of "catch up" or face the possibility of being forced to lock down access to newer technology to achieve the necessary requirements for costs, security, and service that they require.

What do you think about enterprise mobility and open standards? We invite you to comment and send feedback.

Chris Murphy, VP Technology at Movero Technology.

Fri, 16 Apr 2010 11:11:00 -0700 iPhone 4.0: Built to Hook Businesses of all Shapes and Sizes http://blog.moverotech.com/iphone-40-built-to-hook-the-business-professi http://blog.moverotech.com/iphone-40-built-to-hook-the-business-professi

Since 2007, Apple has revolutionized the wireless telecommunications industry by creating an easy to use mobile platform that allows users to manage their personal/professional lives from one single wireless device. Originally, Apple’s marketing efforts were primarily directed toward consumers but law firms, educational institutions, health care agencies and a number of other businesses wanted to take advantage of the new technology, its robust operating system (OS) and software applications. Last week, Apple announced the latest OS update, iPhone 4.0, set to launch nationally this summer.

Iphone3gsappsx535
Today, business professionals and consumers alike are key components to Apple’s success in selling more than 50 million iPhones. According to CMS Wire, one enterprising initiative is the solution of a unified inbox, where e-mail from multiple inboxes display in one location. Users can view inboxes independently or together, so a mix of personal and business messages can coexist.

Article-1270735281041-090d1038000005dc-622835_636x300

Here are some of the features launching with the new iPhone 4.0 OS.

 New iPhone 4.0 features:

Enterprise Features:

  • Data protection:   Increased security, with encrypted e-mail data in applications
  • Mobile device management: MDM details coming soon. MDM appeals to IT and program managers to secure corporate data and enforce polices
  • Wireless app distribution: Companies can create and send their own custom applications to company iPhones, rather than go via the App Store
  • Multiple exchange accounts:  Exchange server 2010 support
  • SSL VPN support:  Cisco and Juniper Support for SSL VPN

 Multi-tasking services

  • Background audio:  Play audio in the background, e.g. Pandora
  • Background locations:  Have GPS running in the background while performing other tasks
  • Fast app switching:  Easily switch between running applications
  • Local notifications:  Non-Internet notifications: perhaps using SMS technology
  • Push notifications:  Push email for multiple Exchanges
  • Task completion:  Finish work in the background while working on other stuff. E.g. Upload a picture, finish that in the background and continue uploading other pictures
  • VoIP:  Keep Skype running in the background. User can receive calls while performing other tasks

Folders:

  • Organize apps into distinct folders with drag-and drop functions, allowing access to thousands of applications quickly on the device. Manage up to 2160 apps at once — many more than the current limit of 180 apps.

Enhanced Email:

  • Enjoy multiple Microsoft Exchange accounts; users are no longer limited to just one.

 iBooks

  • Browse, buy, and read books on a mobile device

iAd

  • A mobile advertising platform from Apple; Apps can feature rich media ads that combine the emotion of TV with the interactivity of the web

Protecting the electronic healthcare information on your employees’ mobile devices:

According to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Security Rule, covered entities are required to develop and implement policies and procedures to guard against and react to security incidents of Electronic Protected Health Information (ePHI) that you create, receive or transmit on wireless devices, smartphones, and PDAs.

Here are some best practices to help you get started in managing your ePHI and mobile phones environment.

·       Identify the number of mobile devices that access your network and contain ePHI

·       Determine what security measures are already in place and who has access

·       Conduct an accurate assessment of potential risks and vulnerabilities

·       Implement an MDM solution to prevent, detect, contain and correct security violations

Movero helps companies of all shapes and sizes manage mobility and protect their electronic information.

Tue, 30 Mar 2010 08:47:00 -0700 Business Basics: Overview for MS Windows Mobile 7 http://blog.moverotech.com/microsoft-windows-mobile-7-overview-we-have-b http://blog.moverotech.com/microsoft-windows-mobile-7-overview-we-have-b

We have been hearing tons of information about the new Windows Mobile 7   (WM7) platform. Businesses everywhere want to know the clear-cut details about WM7 and what the technology can do for their organizations.

First, Microsoft is completely rebranding their Windows Mobile legacy operating system, which includes a complete code makeover and new look with the intention to provide a better, more robust user experience.

Microsoft is undergoing much scrutiny for this bold OS change. We think change is good and inevitable. Microsoft needs to keep up with the mainstream competition, which includes iPhone and Android technology.

Change isn’t always easy. Enterprises will need to adapt. For example, Microsoft will not offer an OS update for WM6 to WM7. For those organizations that are currently using or have developed mobile applications, they will not be compatible with WM7 devices. Additionally, Firefox will no longer be available as a native application on WM7 leaving IE as the primary mobile browser.

The new advancements will capture the eye of consumers and business professionals alike. Below are some of the basic features to expect from the WM7 platform.

Windows Mobile 7 Features:

•    Multi Touch Technology
•    Tiled User Interface
•    Robust Xbox Live
•    Zune HD Radio
•    FM Radio
•    Wireless Cloud Syncing
•    Social Media Tools
•    WiFi
•    AGPS
•    High Resolution Camera
•    Large WVGA screen with a single aspect ratio
•    Outlook and Office Support

What’s in it for the developers?
Microsoft has made some good choices in their platform vision. Currently the application interface (API) is primarily designed for consumer feature phone type applications; however, they have set a good foundation for future advancements.

Developers can use:
•    Silverlight
•    Expression Blend
•    Visual Studio
•    XNA framework

Movero is planning on supporting Enterprise and SMB clients that would like to adopt Window Mobile 7 technology.

Please let me know your thoughts in the comments section below. We appreciate your feedback.

Best,

Tue, 02 Mar 2010 14:56:00 -0800 Wireless Knowledge, Expertise and Great Attitudes Set Movero Agents Apart from the Rest! http://blog.moverotech.com/wireless-knowledge-expertise-and-great-attitu http://blog.moverotech.com/wireless-knowledge-expertise-and-great-attitu

Everyday Movero Certified Mobility Experts help enterprise employees with real technical issues concerning their smartphones, email, calendar, VPN connection, BES connection, mobile application configuration, iTunes, and Active Sync setup (the list goes on).

We also realize (because we are consumers too) that in this day and age quality technical support and customer service is hard to come by, that’s why we are extremely proud of our mobile experts at Movero. Here is another comment from a satisfied customer in the higher education vertical that was kind enough to pass on a positive message about our Mobility Expert Unique.

Experiences like this happen everyday at Movero and we wanted to share this experience with our customers, fans, colleagues, partners and prospects.

Thank you for a job well done Unique!

Dear Movero,
“I was not aware of the rate plan I had or that I was over the minutes allocated. We have been involved in nationwide recruitment telephone interviews since January which are ending tomorrow, so the February billing will also be higher.”

“I talked to Unique from the Movero Help Desk who switched the current plan to the nationwide unlimited. Unique was very helpful, professional, and provided excellent customer service, which was really appreciated.”

Again, thank you.

Check out one of the many kudos we receive from our customers about our technical representatives. We are proud to have the very best on our team. BlackBerry issue resolved!

"I would just like you all to know what a tremendous help Alex was in getting me reconnected last night to my Blackberry.  Calling technical support anywhere can sometimes be a very frustrating experience.  Alex was friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and responsive.  And best of all I’m connected.  He represents exactly what a caller hopes to hear when asking for help."

Thank you,

Wed, 17 Feb 2010 12:38:00 -0800 Mobile devices are being recognized as critical IT assets! http://blog.moverotech.com/mobile-devices-are-being-recognized-as-critic http://blog.moverotech.com/mobile-devices-are-being-recognized-as-critic

In January, Aberdeen, Forrester and IDC all came out with reports around the rise of mobility (e.g., smartphone, applications, etc.) in the workplace and the pressure it's placing on existing IT resources.

All I have to say is FINALLY!:-)  Mobile devices are now being recognized as critical IT assets!

Please excuse my excitement; however, I am sure many of my industry peers feel quite similar.

Movero was started in 2003, with the belief that businesses would face internal management challenges as more employees began to adopt wireless technology.  In fact, our very first customer in 2003 was turn-key support for an application (e.g., e-prescription software) on 3,000 smartphones (remember the Toshiba 2032).  We had to manually load the software on the devices and then personally train each and every physician / doctor on the hardware and software.

We were ready for 2010 in 2003, so I am definitely looking forward to the next several years in mobility!
